Phil Mickelson Had to Give Nine Sheepish Hat Tips on Saturday
As far as rounds of the year go, it'll be hard pressed to find a better one than the 63 Phil Mickelson posted on Saturday, if he can go on to win the Shell Houston Open.
Heading into the event, Mickelson wasn't even concentrating on winning, saying he was concerned about hitting driver this week at Redstone Golf Course but thought he'd do it anyway in preparation of Augusta.
But here he is, leading the whole dang thing with one round to play, the first time he's been in such a position since the Masters a year ago. It was a lackluster start to the year for Phil, but that seems to be the case these days. I commented on Twitter before Saturday that Phil had broke 70 only once in his last 12 rounds, but he took care of that with a bogey-free round of golf that was as brilliant a round as we've seen in 2011.
Phil loves the Masters, it fits his eye, and it seems he's rounding into shape at the right time. Maybe he will win this event, but even if he doesn't, the momentum train is pulling into the correct station at the perfect time, and for Mickelson, only positives can be pulled from Houston at this point. Well, unless he had six figures on Kentucky. Then maybe not so much.
